3 Things That Can Reduce Organic Coconut Sugar’s Quality

Organic coconut sugar is a healthier and more natural alternative to refined white and brown sugar. With its caramel-like flavor and trace minerals, it’s becoming a favorite in many kitchens. But while coconut sugar is durable and doesn’t spoil easily, its quality can still decline if it’s not stored properly.

To make the most of your organic coconut sugar, it’s important to understand the factors that can affect its freshness and flavor.

1. Bugs

The natural sweetness of coconut sugar can attract bug, especially ants. If your sugar isn’t stored in a sealed container, insects may get inside and contaminate it. To protect your coconut sugar from pests, always keep it in an airtight jar or container before placing it in your pantry.

2. Moisture

Moisture won’t make coconut sugar moldy, but it can cause the crystals to harden into solid clumps. While clumped sugar is still safe to use, it’s inconvenient for cooking and baking because it doesn’t measure or mix well. Storing your sugar in a cool, dry place will help maintain its free-flowing texture.

3. Strong Aromas

Coconut sugar has the ability to absorb odors from its surroundings. If it’s stored near spices, coffee, or other strong-smelling foods, those aromas can alter its natural flavor. To keep its taste pure, make sure your coconut sugar is sealed tightly and stored separately from other fragrant ingredients.

Final Thoughts

One of the best qualities of organic coconut sugar is that it won’t spoil the way fresh food does. However, exposure to bugs, moisture, and strong aromas can reduce its quality over time. By storing your sugar properly in an airtight container, you can preserve its flavor and texture for much longer.
